Simon Hewitt Jones - The Violin Blog

emiIf you didn’t hear of the recent Apple/EMI decision to make music available for download with no DRM at all (albeit at a slightly higher price), read about it here. Sure this is good for music-lovers, but you might be wondering why there’s such a fuss, and why some people think this is so significant.

In itself, this is a predictable, inevitable development in downloading, but it is also the first serious piece of attrition that will lead to a music-like-water method of distribution. If the technology is there, as I understand it is, to track the frequency of listens to a particular track over many different formats in many different places, this would be the perfect non-controlled way of measuring popularity and therefore financial compensation. Watch for a similar monetization of streaming video on Youtube later in the year.

If this became a reality, being a musician would be increasingly less about having to ‘find’ exposure and promote music. The whole process would become much more organic, and good music would find its own audience.

Revenue aside, this is beginning to happen. Which already changes the game for independent musicians.
