That Joshua Bell Busking Experiment
I wasn’t going to post about this:
But every music blogger and newspaper opinion person having had their $0.10, may I just ask if I am the only person not to be the slightest bit surprised by this? Interestingly, the only writers I read who really understood what was going on here are professional marketing people.
Context is more and more important than ever in music. Putting Joshua Bell in a subway is completely the wrong context. Unless someone who recognized him passes by (or just the very occasional exception, as proved in the article), of course no-one’s going to stop and listen.
Read my about page for more about music and context.

I agree - although I suspect if he had played Ysaye or a Paganini caprice instead of the Bach Chaconne, he might have had more luck…
