Simon Hewitt Jones - The Violin Blog

Tommy & I recently recorded an arrangement by composer Michael Jennings based on the theme of a Polish Tango, as part of an installation for the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival by sound artist Janek Schaefer.

Janek’s show opens on Friday 16th at the Huddersfield Art Gallery, and runs until 5 January 2008.

As the music emanates from nine different vinyl records, each playing on a separate machine and subject to interruption by the installations’ visitors, it celebrates hope, survival, and new beginnings. Taking as his startpoint the ‘Jodoform’ musical codes of World War II, Janek has been inspired by the contrasts between the life of his young daughter in suburban Surrey, and the tumultuous childhood of his mother in wartime Poland.

Read about the project on this page of Janek’s website, where you can also hear a sound clip.
