Oh if only I could be as good with things that beep as I am enthusiastic about them! I had a short video-film and interview with Janek Schaefer about his work ‘Extended Play’ from the opening of the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, but technology has passed me by, so you’ll have to make do with pictures instead!
The end result was a very thoughtful and beautiful installation and if you’re passing near Huddersfield before 5 January 2008, it is well worth a detour.
The piece, inspired by the contrast in childhood environment between the composer’s daughter (born in Surrey, 2005) and mother (born in Poland, 1942) features fragmented recordings of violin and cello (me & Tommy) and piano (composer Mike Jennings), in an arrangement that Mike made of a piece of Jodaform - a musical work broadcast by the BBC World Service during the war to signify a specific coded to those listening.
Janek’s page about the project, including exhibition information, is here.
