Adrian Boult

Apocryphally, Sir Adrian Boult was taken to the Palestine of old by those in charge of the British mandate, back in the middle of the last century. He was really quite enamoured by it all, and took great pleasure in recounting the story of his journey, especially the fact that the British had arranged for him to travel in a bulletproof car, of which he was rather proud.
Thomas Beecham, that legendary wit, was none too taken with the glamour of Boult’s stories, or indeed Boult himself.
"A bulletproof car, eh?" he remarked. "I didn’t know the Arabs were so fond of music!"
